The South Indian Chefs Association (SICA), www.sica.co.in, opened its doors in Chennai, India to All Hotels in South India, to second time returner Mauritius and for the First Time Team Sri Lanka to the their 5th Edition of the Culinary Arts and Food Expo 2018. This is the first time that the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS), www.worldchefs.org, have endorsed the competition where in the Judges are from all over the world all licensed and registered by WACS.

WAI@SLIIT’s very own Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery & Industry Placement Coordinator / Lecturer Chef Samantha Surene, who is also an Executive Committee Member of the Chefs Guild of Lanka and Advisor to the Young Chefs Club of Lanka, was called upon by Chef Dimuthu Kumarasinghe, President of the Chefs Guild of Lanka, to coordinate all affairs of the Sri Lankan Team in Chennai. The team consisted of Executive Chef and Executive Pastry Chef of Araliya Green City and Executive Chef of Golden Ridge Hotel, both in Nuwara Eliya and Sous Chef of Mount Lavinia Hotel Catering here in Colombo.

While coordinating the team, whose arrival was the very first time in Chennai, William Angliss Institute @ SLIIT Chef Surene took part in the Team Challenge – Buffet Setup, where in the team was to setup an entire buffet, from food to Buffet table set up to dining table and service, for 18 persons including the Judges. To this the Sri Lankan Team Won a Bronze Medal by WACS.

Overall, the team brought back to Sri Lanka – 2 Gold medals, 1 silver medal and 6 bronze Medals.

WAI@SLIIT would like to thank the Chefs Guild of Lanka for the opportunity extended to its academic staff member which was based on the support that WAI@SLIIT had given the Chefs Guild of Lanka during the 18th Edition of the Culinary Arts & Food Expo 2018 which took place at BMICH between the 30th May to the 3rd of June 2018 wherein the Students of Commercial Cookery assisted with the fluid flow of the competitors  and organizing committee during the competition.
