As a part of the William Angliss Institute (WAI), Australia curriculum followed at the Colombo Academy of Hospitality Management (CAHM), the students are encouraged to organize events in order to build team spirit, understand leadership values and other traits of being a part of the Hospitality, Tourism, Foods and Events Industries.
Along with WAI, Melbourne, CAHM is in partnership with SLIIT, Malabe; which is also the location of the Academy. The space and capacity available in the campus provides students with facilities to make the best out of their time at CAHM.

The students of CAHM collaborated their talent, creativity and skills and put together the most colourful event of the year, “CAHM Ekka Avurudu”. This event was held on the 8th of April and was a full day of fun, food and celebrations.

“CAHM Ekka Avurudu” commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, by Mr. Errol Weerasinghe – Chairman of CAHM, Prof. Lalith Gamage – Managing Director and CEO of SLIIT, Mr. Sharad Sri Dharan – Director of CAHM and Mr. Steven Bradie-Miles – CEO of CAHM who graced the occasion.

The food table was laid with milk rice, curry and Sri Lankan sweet meats prepared by the students themselves with the supervision of Chef Kapila Jayanetti and Chef Samantha Surene. The rest of the event took place with traditional Avurudu games such as; pillow fighting, feeding yoghurt, egg passing, sack race, eating buns, placing the eye on the Elephant and the famous “Avurudu Kumaraya and Kumari” contest.

The students were guided by lecturers, Mr. Kasun Abeynayaka, Mr. Dimuth Rubesinghe and Ms. Michelle De Silva in organizing the above games and the overall event.
Organizing such events and giving these students experience in working under pressure to achieve their goals and said tasks will produce “Career Ready” graduates. At the Academy, incorporating the “fun” element while being a part of tradition is diligently adhered to in order to make a student’s campus life interesting and enjoyable.
